Three families, a shared language of silver

The natural world / 01
Silver, shaped into everything that grows.
A lotus opening. A bird mid-turn. A garden held in silver. Vann carries the natural motifs of Indian carving, block printing and miniature painting into objects made to be carried and kept.

A thousand strikes. Every one exact.
Five designs explore the discipline of pattern. Rosettes, lattices and scrollwork draw on the craft vocabulary of Rajasthan, bringing repeated forms into balance through repoussé, chasing and carefully darkened recesses.

Some stories deserve to be held.
A blessing. A procession. Two figures together. Kathā turns remembered scenes into silver, raising figures from the sheet and refining each gesture until a story becomes something tangible.

Journey of a jewel
Repoussé shapes the motif from the back of the silver sheet, bringing petals, birds and figures into relief.
Chasing refines the surface from the front: the edge of a leaf, the fold of a garment, the line of a feather.
On designs with an oxidised finish, darkened recesses let the raised silver stand forward. Piercing, granulation, enamel and stone setting add their own character to selected pieces.
The vocabulary
Sterling silver is a common metal. What it costs here is the hours spent moving it by hand — raised from behind, turned, struck again from the front, finished so the shadow falls where it was meant to. A single bag takes something near fifteen thousand hammer strikes. Each technique leaves its own evidence at close range.

The design is hammered from the reverse of the sheet until it stands in relief on the front. The silver is stretched into its shape; nothing is cast, nothing is added. A panel that tears in the eighth hour begins again as a flat sheet.
What to look for
Turn a panel over. The relief is there in reverse, hollow behind every raised form. A cast piece is solid, or backed flat.
After the form has been raised, small tools work from the front to define its details: the edge of a petal, the line of a feather, the fold of a garment.
What to look for
Look for fine tool marks and crisp edges within the raised motif. The detail is worked into the surface by hand.
An engraving tool cuts fine lines into the surface of the silver. These incisions bring texture and definition to selected details.
What to look for
Look for narrow incised lines below the surface, catching shadow as the piece turns in the light.
Tiny silver granules bring a finely beaded texture to selected pieces. Each detail adds another point of light to the finished surface.
What to look for
Look closely at the raised beads and the spaces between them, particularly on patterned handles and plumage.
Darkened recesses give contrast to polished silver. The finish helps a raised flower, figure or lattice stand forward from the ground.
What to look for
Turn the piece towards the light. The high points brighten while the recessed details hold their shadow.
